Mentoring Those in Need
Visit any of the homeless shelters in town, and you will quickly notice that the vast majority of the people who are there are in some stage of recovery from homelessness or poverty. There are very few middle class people who are willing to spend the time and energy it takes to help someone change there mindset so that they can move out of poverty and into mainstream society. However, this is exactly what needs to occur if people are going to change and thrive, rather than just survive. They have to change the way they think about money, employment, relationships, failure, success, anger, authority, self-gratification and discipline.
It is for this reason that you cannot just throw money and resources at the problem of poverty. If people are going to change, they need support systems and role models. They need people who understand what it takes to be successful in the middle class, and have the patience to work with people who might take awhile to understand the changes that need to be made.
This is where you can help. Come down and volunteer at St. Anne's on a regular basis and start to get to know those who are staying here. You can volunteer to help at the desk, or as a dorm monitor...or you can offer a regular activity on a weekly or monthly basis such as movie night, or a teach bible study or a self improvement class. As you get to know the people, you will begin to get a feel for what they need, and how you can help. Sometimes, it is only takes a friendly person to listen to their story to help. |
